Auckland front-row forward Mauriohooho Allen John ‘Joe’ Murray toured Australia with the Kiwis in 1956.
Playing for Richmond and Glenora during his club career, Murray scored three tries in eight appearances for New Zealand but could not crack the Test line-up on the ’56 tour.
Just weeks after returning, Murray was on his way to Australia again with the New Zealand Māori side. He scored 54 points in 11 matches – including a remarkable haul of 31 points (three tries, 11 goals) in a 67-13 win over Monaro in Goulburn, and five goals in a 22-17 victory over Riverina in Griffith.
