Giant forward Se’e Solomona’s eventful, well-travelled rugby league career peaked in 1993, when he made four Test appearances for New Zealand while at English club Oldham.

The Richmond Bulldogs powerhouse debuted for Auckland during a stellar 1988 season, making the first of two appearances for the province in wins against Great Britain (he would also feature in the 1990 victory).

Solomona spent 1989 with Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs as part of the NZRL’s rookie scheme but did not break into the first-grade side. He represented Western Samoa at the 1990 Pacific Cup, was a Kiwi triallist in 1990-91 and turned out for a Presidents XIII in a big win over France in the latter year.

The 26-year-old joined Widnes for the 1991-92 English winter and starred for Oldham the following season, before receiving his maiden Kiwis call-up for the 1993 series against Australia.

Solomona started at prop in the 14-all draw in Auckland and the 16-8 loss in Palmerston North, teaming up with stalwart Brent Todd against the vaunted Australian combination of Glenn Lazarus and Paul Harragon.

Again playing with Oldham in the 1993-94 season, Solomona lined up at prop in the visiting Kiwis’ second- and third-Test defeats to Great Britain.

The veteran was recruited for the fledgling Auckland Warriors’ 1995 foundation season and played in their first-ever match but ultimately made just nine top-grade appearances for the club, and only four under Graham Lowe with North Queensland Cowboys. In between, Solomona played both matches for Lowe-coached Western Samoa at the 1995 World Cup.

A nephew, David Solomona, played 13 Tests for New Zealand from 2001-05.
