Former All Black winger Alwin ‘Dougie’ McGregor scored two tries in his sole rugby league Test appearance for New Zealand.
A prolific tryscorer for Ponsonby and Auckland, McGregor crossed 15 times in 11 games on the All Blacks’ 1913 tour of Australia and North America. He played in two Tests against Australia and USA.
Switching codes in 1915 with Grafton Athletic, McGregor quickly earned a call-up for Auckland. International football was on hiatus due to World War I but he was chosen in New Zealand’s first squad after its conclusion – the 1919 tour of Australia.
McGregor played in all four matches against NSW – scoring tries in three of them – and also appeared twice against Queensland and in the clash with Rockhampton.
He lined up in the third Test against the vaunted Australian team later that year, scoring two tries in New Zealand’s 34-23 loss in Auckland.
McGregor joined Ponsonby the following season. In retirement, he coached Otago, Newton Rangers and Ponsonby.
