Lightweight Hawke’s Bay forward Vic Banks was a tryscorer in his sole appearance for New Zealand against England in 1914.
Born in Britain, Banks played for the Kia Ora club and in Hawke’s Bay’s historic 1912 clash with Canterbury during the code’s formative years in the region.
‘Bruiser’ Banks won second-row selection for the one-off Test against the 1914 English tourists and crossed for a second-half in the hosts’ 16-13 loss at Auckland’s Domain Cricket Ground.
Joining the New Zealand Army’s cause during the Great War, Banks was wounded in combat in Europe.
