Auckland hooker Gordon Campbell played two Tests for New Zealand against the 1932 English tourists.
The diminutive ‘Stump’ Campbell – who reportedly played at 68kg and 165cm – initially played for Richmond Rovers and debuted for Auckland after joining Marist in 1928.
A North Island rep in 1931, Campbell also featured in Marist’ Fox Memorial success that year.
In 1932, his appearance for Auckland against England – in which he kicked a field goal in a 19-14 loss at Carlaw Park – was the first of four appearances against the visitors.
Campbell was subsequently chosen to replace Neville St George as New Zealand’s hooker for the second Test a week later and earned parity for the home side in the scrums up against England John Lowe, but he could not prevent a series-sealing 24-9 loss.
Playing three games in seven days, Campbell turned out in New Zealand Presidents XIII’s heavy midweek loss to England and the spirited 20-18 defeat in the third Test.
Campbell later coached Ponsonby and was a founding chairman of the New Zealand Rugby League Old Boys’ Association, while he played his last ‘friendly’ match at the ripe old age of 57.
