Wellington’s George Spencer, alongside younger brother John, created history as the first set of brothers to represent New Zealand in rugby union and rugby league.

A long-serving Wellington rugby union fullback, Spencer represented North Island and New Zealand in 1907. He played five matches for the All Blacks, two each against Queensland and NSW, and one against Wellington at the end of a tour his brother was also on.

The pair switched codes and were selected for New Zealand’s rugby league tour of Australia in 1909. Thirty-year-old George lined up at fullback in three matches against NSW and played in the third Test against Australia, a 25-5 loss in Sydney.

Spencer later represented Wellington against the touring NSW team in 1912.
