At home in the backline or the forward pack, George Paki toured Australia with the 1921 New Zealand team.

Paki was a rugby union player in Huntly before switching to rugby league with Ponsonby in 1915. He moved to City Rovers, represented Auckland in provincial competition in 1918 and against New Zealand in 1919, and played for South Auckland against England in 1920.

He was selected as a forward for New Zealand’s 1921 tour (where no Tests were played) but made appearances at stand-off and fullback, as well as prop, among five outings. Paki scored a try in the last tour match, a 27-14 win over Newcastle.

Returning to Australia with the New Zealand Māori side in 1922 alongside his brother, future St George player Huatahi Turoa Brown ‘Brownie’ Paki, and illustrated his versatility again by playing matches in the second-row and at fullback and centre.

Later in 1922, he scored a try from the wing in Hawke’s Bay-Auckland’s loss to Australia.

Paki is the great grand uncle of future Kiwis great Lance Hohaia.
