Versatile City-Newton back Doug Ellwood toured Australia twice with the Kiwis and played Tests at stand-off and fullback.
Ellwood represented Auckland in victories against Australia in 1961 and Great Britain in 1962, scoring two tries in the latter.
The following season he was chosen as Canterbury five-eighth Jim Bond’s understudy for the Kiwis’ tour of Australia, where he appeared in eight minor matches. He played at halfback alongside Bond in the 22-7 loss to the mighty St George side, which was on its way to an eighth straight NSWRL premiership.
Ellwood, also capable in the three-quarter line, made his Test debut off the bench (replacing Ken McCracken) during the 1964 series opener against France at Carlaw Park, which New Zealand won 24-16.
After making his first Test start at five-eighth in the 1965 series-opening loss to Australia in Auckland, he made way for Paul Schultz for the second Test and missed the tour to Britain and France at the end of the year.
Ellwood was back in the Kiwis fold for the 1967 tour of Australia, racking up 72 points in eight minor tour matches, as well playing at five-eighth in the first Test and fullback in the third encounter with the green-and-golds.
His tenure in the New Zealand team concluded with appearances at fullback in its 1968 World Cup defeats to Australia at Lang Park and Great Britain at the SCG.
A lengthy stint as player-coach with Wagga Magpies ensued, representing Riverina against Great Britain in 1970. He returned to Auckland and coached Ellerslie and Mount Wellington.
