Taranaki winger Cliff Hunt starred for New Zealand in the 1935 Test series against Australia.
A talented rugby union player, Hunt trialled for the All Blacks in 1929 and represented Taranaki against the British Isles in 1930. He switched to rugby league with the Inglewood club and became Taranaki captain that year.
Hunt put himself in the forefront of the selection conversation with two tries for New Zealand XIII in the second match of Australia’s 1935 tour. He was called up at centre for the second Test and scored the Kiwis’ only two tries in a 29-8 loss at Carlaw Park, then moved to fullback for the decider at the same venue with Australia prevailed 31-8.
Hunt lined up for Taranaki against England in 1936 but was overlooked for national duty.
