Taranaki second-rower Bruce Gall made two overseas tours with the Kiwis in the early-1980s.

From the Fitzroy club, Gall’s promise was evident when he was selected in the New Zealand XIII line-up that defeated Combined Sydney in 1976 – a year in which the Kiwis did not have any fixtures scheduled.

But he had to wait until 1980 for a full national call-up, representing Central Districts against Australia that year before earning a place in the Kiwis’ squad for the tour of Britain and France. Though he could not crack the Test side, he enjoyed one of the individual highlights of the tour when he scored three tries in a 20-12 win over Hull KR.

Gall was chosen for the 1982 tour of Australia and Papua New Guinea, playing all three Tests after scoring two tries in the opening match against Gold Coast. He made his Test debut in the second-row in an 11-8 loss to Australia at Lang Park and featured in the 20-2 defeat at the SCG, then scored a try in a 56-5 victory over Papua New Guinea in Port Moresby.

Gall spent the 1983-84 seasons with Balmain Tigers, making 11 first-grade appearances. He was named in Taranaki’s Team of the Century in 2008.
