Auckland forward Bob Mitchell played in the one-off Test against England in 1914 after representing New Zealand against Australian opposition in the previous two seasons.
City Rovers’ Mitchell played for Auckland against England in 1910 and in a historic win over NSW in 1912. He featured in the New Zealand pack in an 18-10 loss to NSW in Auckland in 1912.
Mitchell toured Australia with the New Zealand side the following season and made six appearances, including a three-try performance in a 29-12 win over Ipswich. Mitchell also played in New Zealand’s only win in four matches against NSW. He lined up in both of New Zealand’s losses against the visiting NSW side later in 1913.
After representing Auckland in a 34-12 loss to England in 1914, Mitchell – now with Grafton Athletic – retained his place in the New Zealand team to play in the 16-13 defeat to the tourists at the Domain Cricket Ground.
The veteran played for Auckland Province against Australia in 1919, transferring to Marist Old Boys that year. He later returned to City and played against Maritime in the main game on Carlaw Park’s opening day in 1921.
